Managing Probes
Checking a probe
Probe Info, at the top of Networking › Devices, shows every probe with:
- a green dot (Online) if its last scan arrived within the scan interval, a grey dot (Not recent) otherwise;
- the name, operating system and IP address of the machine;
- Last Sync, the time of the last scan received;
- Agent Version, the version of the probe, with a download icon when a newer version is available.
If a probe is not recent, see Troubleshooting.
Changing the configuration
Networks, credentials and scan interval are changed only in the portal (see Configuring the Probe). The probe receives the changes by itself at its next cycle; you never need to reinstall it.
Starting and stopping the service
From PowerShell opened with Run as administrator:
Get-Service CGDIMNetworkProbe # status
Restart-Service CGDIMNetworkProbe # restart, for example to apply a configuration change right away
Stop-Service CGDIMNetworkProbe # stop
Start-Service CGDIMNetworkProbe # start
You can also use the Services console: the service is CyberGuard Device Inventory Manager - Network Probe.
Updating the probe
The probe does not update itself. When a download icon appears next to its version in Probe Info:
- Click Download Agent and extract the new package on the machine.
- In the configuration of the probe, click Generate installation code.
- From an administrator prompt in the extracted folder, run the command shown in the portal:
.\CyberGuard-NetworkProbe.exe --install <installation code>
The command updates the probe in place: same folder, same service, same configuration. The new code replaces the previous registration only if the registration succeeds.
Moving the probe to another machine
The probe's registration is tied to the machine where it was installed: copying its folder to another machine does not work.
- Install the probe on the new machine with a new installation code (see Installation). The new registration replaces the old one.
- Uninstall the probe from the old machine (see below).
Uninstalling the probe
From an administrator prompt, run the installed executable:
C:\CyberGuard\DIM-NetworkProbe\CyberGuard-NetworkProbe.exe --uninstall
The command must be run from C:\CyberGuard\DIM-NetworkProbe, not from the copy you downloaded. It removes the Windows service but leaves the folder: to remove the probe completely, delete C:\CyberGuard\DIM-NetworkProbe afterwards.
Deleting a probe from the portal
When a site no longer needs a probe:
- Uninstall the probe from its machine.
- In the Probe Configuration page, delete its targets and its SNMP credentials.
- In the Probes page, click the delete icon of the probe and confirm.
A probe that still has targets or credentials cannot be deleted. The network devices it found stay in the list: they become Disconnected after 7 days without answers, and you can delete them from their page. They keep their notes and asset data: if another probe later finds the same IP address, it takes them over.
